The number of complaints Ofcom have received about alleged racial abuse in the Celebrity Big Brother house has reached 2,000. This alleged racial abuse is said to have been directed at Shilpa Shetty, from numerous house mates. Evicted house mate Jackiey Budden referred to Shetty as "the Indian" and refused to correctly pronounce her name. Some other ladies in the house such as Jo O'Meara, Danielle Lloyd, and Jade Goody, have all reportedly mocked Shetty's accent, as well as the pronunciation of her name.
However, the highest amounts of complaints were about an argument between Shetty and Jack Tweed, in which Tweed called Shetty a name that was bleeped out by the producers. The audience automatically thought Tweed has used a racial slur, and therefore complained. However, Channel 4 claims Tweed called her the taboo "C word", and not a racially degrading term. (Not that the "C word" is much better.) Channel 4 has not received any personal complaints from Shetty and says, "We don't tolerate any racist abuse in any form."
We've known for a while that the girls in the BB house don't particularly like Shetty. I wonder if everyone is just being too sensitive and jumping to conclusions. However, the girls really need to watch their mouths and realize how their actions could be construed as racist. I think the other BB girls just have a problem with Shilpa Shetty partly because of how she acts, and partly because she is a very beautiful girl. However, they need to remember that they're on national television, and will eventually have to leave that house and face the public.
