Whitney Houston did not die from drowning but by mixing prescription drugs with alcohol, TMZ is reporting.

According to the website, Whitney's family was told by coroners that the singer did not have enough water in her lungs to have drowned in the bath as previously thought.

Instead, it's thought she may have accidentally mixed prescription drugs found in her room including the painkiller Xanax with alcohol.

Family sources have apparently also confirmed that Whitney's aunt discovered her body in the bathtub.

Mary Jones reportedly laid out the singer's dress on her bed for that evening's pre-Grammys gala which Whitney was planning to attend before leaving the room while she took a bath. Mary returned to find Whitney had stopped breathing.

It's thought the coroner will release the body to the Houston family tomorrow.
